I think some places are just not traditionally garagey sort of places. It's like fenced yards. In some areas, it's absolutely, completely normal to have a fence. In some places, they look at you like you're crazy when you say you're looking for a house with one. When I moved to North Dakota, I thought it was insane that nobody had attached garages. We had windchills as low as -57, with blizzards and swirling winds. Who wants to trek across the back yard in THAT every day?? And yet, it was totally Not a Thing. You think it's all the same country, and then you move around and realize there are an awful lot of regional differences you've always taken for granted.

I hope you can find just the right house, in a place where you feel safe and relaxed when you're home. Good luck with the process, and good luck with the move, too!

Another option is Millbrook. It is on the other side of the interstate from Prattville. It has less commercial development and is more of a bedroom community (although that is changing). Moderator cut: real estate recommendations not allowed Good luck.

Prattville and Millbrook are perfectly fine. East Montgomery will be at least a 20 min commute but is newer west of the eastern bypass.

All, we made it and are now living in Prattville! We increased our budget by $200 and found a really nice house WITH a garage! I actually really like it here except for the fact that Publix is not even close to as awesome as HEB. ) The town has everything we need, our neighborhood is nice and oh my gosh the people here are so FRIENDLY! Texas is pretty friendly too, but I suppose people are not as outgoing. It seems that everywhere we go, someone is striking up a conversation. It's also quite scenic around here (but what the heck is up with that "Go to Church or the Devil will get you" sign???). The commute to Montgomery is also pretty painless. Phew, I was so worried, but I think I'll be perfectly happy here.

We did drive through a really scary town coming here though. I don't remember what it was called but I plan on not ever driving through there again.

That go to church sign by that water wheel cracks up most visitors when I point it out.

Glad you are enjoying Prattville and that your commute isn't too bad. Even though Prattville is 10 or 15 miles away from the center of Montgomery, the fact is there is very little density between the two because of the river (and flood plain I presume), and air force base... so it isn't like most mid-size or major cities that are 10 or 15 miles away where there is heavy congestion the whole way through.
