We are retiring and needs rural setting with at least 1acre of land. 2+beds. 1.5 bath, $100,000 max. Want as far south there as possible. Greenville sound OK but would like more choices. Any one help us?

How close to town do you need to be, and how big of a town? Atmore, Brewton, and Andalusia are all nice areas.

Greenville is ideal if you want to retire to a small town, relatively safe and has quiet nights. There are not many activities there, yet it is safe and relatively inexpensive. The nearest city is Montgomery.
Dothan has far more services and places to go out dining. They are both southern traditional, both very Dixie. Greenville has more a small town rural feel. Both have homes in your price range.
Enterprise would be another good town, it has more goings on than Greenville, yet does not have the urban feel of Dothan.
Andalusia is a bit farther away from things, but is is also a nice town

Rural areas I would suggest Guntersville area. You would be close to Birmingham and to Huntsville. Both are around an hour away. The area still has a rural feel. You also have a huge lake to fish or swim. Guntersville is known for the huge bass in the lake.

You do have 4 seasons here. Mobile area has longer summers but the winters are not as cold.

Don't be isolated from people. You need to be near a hospital and not far from an airport. I've known friends wanting to isolate themselves. It doesn't work for long. They found out the hard way when they found out they had a long drive to the hospital. Think.....

Dothan is fairly close to Cottonwood (~10 miles or so) and has everything one might expect from a small city (~70k population): hospitals, shopping, restaurants, as well as a VA Clinic.

Cottonwood is close to the FLA State line and an easy drive to Panama City Beach.
