South Alabama is getting too developed for my taste. Was great 20 years ago when it was nothing but small towns & rural farmland. Now it's all getting too urban with cracker box subdivisions, strip malls, & generic chain restaurants. And this area is loosing its southern charm. Any good parts of Alabama left that'll stick to its rural southern roots. I don't like the urban lifestyle at all.

Try northeastern Alabama, around the Fort Payne area--the counties of DeKalb, Cherokee, and Marshall, you might find what you're looking for. The western side of AL from Huntsville west is going like Fairhope, more building, traffic, etc.; but the northeastern part of the state is more rural and not as developed like many other areas of AL, where housing remains affordable and property taxes aren't bad.

Fairhope is the only area in Alabama where this is happening outside the B'ham and Huntsville suburbs as far as I can tell. The rest of the state would be salivating for the growth Fairhope is getting.
