Doug Jones voted against confirming Brett Kavanaugh. Can he win re-election despite doing that? Is there any evidence in his record so far that he is a centrist willing to work with “both sides”, which to me would be the only way for him to win re-election, unless Roy Moore runs against him?

Considering that the people who elected him did so in part because of Moore's antics, he would have had to vote against K. to be consistent to his base. That is a one-off with little overall effect on the price of tea in China. Smart mainstream voters understand incumbent advantage translates to more connections, appointments to important committees, and a larger piece of the pie than a newbie can get. Jones already was well-versed in how to work Washington. Unless there was a major mess-up it would be foolish to dump him.

Right now he has about 5 to 6 in 10 chance of getting reelected. There are many shifts occurring in Alabama on the ground due to the younger adults that have come of age and having families getting tired of the same ol', same ol' which has resulted in limited economic growth outside few years statewide. Many of these shifts won't be apparent until the 2020 election cycle, so we'll have to see then.

I'd say a 45% chance. It really depends on if the Republicans in this state move away from the lunatic fringe or not. If they nominate another Bible-beating nutjob mullah like Roy Moore, then anybody with the IQ of a rhesus monkey will file into the voting booth and vote for Jones once again.

Hard-right Republicans really can't fathom how big a bullet they dodged when Doug Jones won. Had Roy Moore won, he would have been the poster child of the Democratic Party in the mid-terms. The flirtation between fundamentalists and the GOP, while giving them some tactical advantages here and there, is what is really keeping them from enjoying a much larger representation in Congress.

IMO Roy Moore got the Kavanaugh treatment, but it worked because Moore was unsympathetic and didn't know how to respond to the truck that hit him.

No, Jones is one and done. The GOP will nominate a strong candidate and things will be normal again...

I think the lawsuits currently underway will decide that question once and for all. But Moore was the village idiot anyway, having been ousted from the State Supreme Court twice. I mean anyone who would mindlessly vote for a goober who would try to copyright the Ten Commandments will vote for just about anyone. Or set up a phony-baloney religious charity, put his wife on the board, and then sucked $200,000 out of it every year without reporting income to the IRS. Or put his name on a textbook that proposed that women shouldn't just not run for political office, but shouldn't be allowed to vote. The list just goes on and on.

And yet mouth-breathing knuckledraggers actually voted for the creep. So I have zero sympathies for people who complain about Doug Jones in office. If they actually voted for Roy Moore in the primary, then it was tantamount to a vote for Jones in the general election.

The funny thing that some don't realize that Doug Jones election encouraged more black voter participation within this state. Also the younger generation of white Alabamians are not a simple minded as some of the older one hence why there are shifts taking place. Finally, you are started to other non-black ethnic minorities voting more often in the urbanized places across the state particularly in Birmingham and Huntsville.

Yeah this isn't going to happen.

#1: Jones only won because stupid Republicans voted for Roy Moore. That's not an option anymore.

#2: People now see that vote could have had disastrous consequences. No more playing around.

#3: Have you seen the economic development in this state lately? It's not being held back by an dumb politics, so no one is tired of that aspect.

People ARE tired of bad infrastructure, though. Neither party is doing much to address that or the REAL problem, which is government waste in the WRONG areas. That is far from an Alabama problem, although Alabama's near the bottom of the list for sure.

I tend to favor conservatism on the federal level, but more liberal at the local level.

Well yeah, unless you like low wage jobs that no functional adult can live off of.

Totally clueless. And very entitled. A lot of people want those jobs, and that is why companies locate here.

Not to mention the effect is has to all the other 'functional adults' around the area.
