(won't let me site the actual file)

Birmingham was ranked the #9 medium sized city of the future (5th for US Cities)

Mobile was ranked #5 overall for cities of the future (#2 for US Cities) competing with the likes of New York, Philly, Nashville, Houston etc

The criteria are Economic Potential, Business friendliness, Human Capital and Lifestyle, and Costeffectivenss and Connectvity. Which it appears Mobile and Birmingham did very well.

For best performing cities of 2021
Huntsville is now ranked #9 for top tier 1 cities (gaining 39 spots between 2020-2021) for best performing cites
Daphne ranks #5 for tier 1 small cities (gaining 10 spots between 2020-2021) for best performing cities

2 Alabama cities were ranked in the top 10 gains
Dothan: Went from rank 138 to rank 60
Decatur: Went from rank 105 to rank 35

A few notable gains
Auburn: ranked 17 (23 last year)
Tuscaloosa: 29 (41 Last year)

I have to say that I don't trust these ranking systems, chiefly because they spit out such wildly differing results based on the statistical biases when it comes to evaluation. In the first one, Birmingham is ranked highly, while ranked poorly in the second. If you look at the Brookings Institute, Birmingham ranks highly again.

So I don't know what to make of these.

These two studies use different criteria, the latter discusses what metros are currently doing well and the other is what metros will do well in the next 5 to 10 years or so

What?!? I live in Dothan and just do not see this. If you count job gains in food service, retail and hospitality we are surely booming but nothing, and I mean NOTHING, changes in this place! A major economic announcement is when two new chain restaurants are building at once.

Funny thing, we just got back from a road trip from Tampa Bay to inspect acreage (103) just south of Dothan....we see a bunch of desirability LOL

Eight very long years has changed my view. There are good things here but many, many issues as well. If you plan on relocating I would strongly advise quite a bit of online research and spending a significant amount of time in the area before doing so. Best of luck.

My brother-in-law just retired from the Army. He is originally from Huntsville and was most recently stationed at Fort Gordon in Augusta, GA. For whatever reason he and his wife decided to buy a house somewhere between Dothan and Fort Rucker and are moving there in the next few weeks. He doesn't have kids or a job lined up or anything. I know living near a military base was high on his list so he could get the most out of his military retiree benefits. But he had that in Augusta and of course we have Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville. So I'm perplexed by the decision to move there where he has no family connections. To be close to the coast maybe? Anyway, hope it works out for them.
