What are the Nielsen DMA rankings?

A DMA is a “Designated Market Area” — each DMA is a geographical area where Nielsen measures media consumption, ranked by local television homes. A DMA not only includes the urban center and suburbs, but it also includes the surrounding counties (aka trade area) where small towns and rural homes receive the same television signals.

Interesting tidbit from the numbers - large metros like Atlanta have a DMA less than half the metro size, while smaller ones like Huntsville actually have more in the DMA than in the offical metro.

Any idea how Nielsen collects data for individual program viewership?

Huntsville’s metro is around 491,000, what is interesting they are counting Decatur and not Athens which is in the metro. Sure similar situations for everyone on the list.

yeah, i think birmingham typically punches above its weight on this list because our TV market includes tuscaloosa and anniston. i'm not sure how certain things were initially established, but i assume geography / topography played a role.

It's a measure of households, not people.

Gotcha, long long time ago WAFF in Huntsville was in Decatur.

WAFF is northern Alabama's oldest television station. The station first began broadcasting from studios and transmitters in Decatur (30 miles (48 km) west of Huntsville) on July 4, 1954, as WMSL-TV, channel 23. From WAFF

Then a metro like Omaha, nearly 1 million by the 2020 US Census at 968,000, has this DMA number lower than significantly smaller metros like Wichita KS, Des Moines IA, Spokane WA, Green Bay WI, Lexington KY. Little Rock AR etc etc Huh?

Omaha always gets jerked around with these “DMA” numbers.

When I came to Huntsville in 1966, Huntsville had WAAY 31 and WHNT 19, and WMSL 23 was still in Decatur. Can't remember when it changed to Huntsville. Probably one reason it changed was so they could put the transmitter on one of the mountains; Decatur doesn't have any. Not sure if there was a PBS station here at the time or not. WZDX 54 came along much later. I think there are a few low-power stations around now as well.
