Gov Kay Ivey has announce the creation of the A-USA corridor (Alabama-USA corridor). This $231.6 project is to bring new rail facilities to several mega sites in South and Central Alabama that will be linked to the fast-growing Port of Mobile and bolster more growth in the Alabama economy and improve logistics in the state.

The first phase of the project will involve 12 track and yard improvements by Norfolk Southern rail between Mobile and Birmingham. According to UA's ACCB, during construction of this project, the state will see nearly $500 mil in business activity and nearly 4,300 new direct and indirect jobs, and 13.1 million in tax revenue

The first phase of the project is to link the Port of Mobile with the McCalla Intermodal Facility in Jefferson County. Along with connecting this new 280 mile rail corridor to several mega sites: Little Canoe Creek in Etowah County, Calera in Shelby County, and Calvert in Mobile/Washington Counties. This project will also see the creation of a new development in McCalla with a new million square-foot warehouse on 104 acres of property

John C. Driscoll has noted that all these locations do have access to interstates, but says that these new rails will allow more interconnectivity and efficiency between the Port and these megasites, therefore allowing more growth for the port and these megasite regions

...That's one of those things I'd throw out a talking point with my sister. I'd never thought it'd actually get done. Granted, it was more toward using the navigable waterways linked to the Mississippi more, but rail would be needed, too. The South in general relies on road and air shipping a bit too much. Upping the water and rail transport would potentially help make the system more efficient.
