Why do they call Alabama the heart of the 'Dirty South'?

I live in Indiana most of the time. They are nobody in particular. You ask about the dirty south up here, and everyone says something about bama.

"Dirty South" is most commonly used by younger folks to describe a genre of southern-based rap music. Houston and Atlanta and south Florida appear to be hotspots for its devotees, with little mention of any Alabama influence.

And it doesn't appear indy-bama grl is a troll--other posts have asked for info on pending college attendance.

dirty south = rap scene in some of the big southern cities.... atlanta being the one that comes to mind the most.

alabama isn't a part of the dirty south.

I've never heard the term "Dirty South". If it's a rap thing, then that's probably why.
