I hope you love Helicopters ; Just kidding , That whole area is real nice down there, I live in Arab Al which is about 75 miles north of Birmingham . I used to drive a truck over the road and I traveled though there many many times. About the Helicopters, I asume your pretty involved with them or you would not be headed there, Fort Rucker is the biggest training facility in the country besides Fort Hood TX. My biggest desire in life was to graduate high school and head streight for Fort Rucker, but due to an nerological problem I was unable to pass my physical. But I still love those Apache Longbows. They fly over Arab quite freqently on a path between Fort Rucker and Huntsville's Redstone Arsenal. As far as the area surrounding the Base , I'm sure you will be very pleased with any community you choose.

Good Luck Always Rick

75 miles north of Birmingham is Tennessee!
I lived for 3 years in Ozark, AL and went to tech. school there. If you are a girl you've got your pick with all the "Rotor heads" that go to flight school. I loved the people, the lake on base, the short drive to dothan, AL for big time shopping and for a quick trip 90 miles south you've got panama city for depravity! I've only been thru Enterprise a few times and it hit me as a place for married or folks living off base to reside. I like the bole weevil atop the square center. I lived in Midland City which was the middle of nowhere.

If your traveling I-65, the north side of Birmingham is at mile marker 262. The last mile marker before intering Tennessee is 366 . Arab is located on US Hwy 231 75 miles north of the community of Tarrent, which is in east Birmingham. From here its another 50 miles to Tennessee if you continue on Hwy 231. Of course when you cross that state line your leaving Dixie .

I live in Dothan which is right by Ft. Rucker. You'll love it... if you like small towns. You'll have to drive to Dothan for a mall, but almost everything else can be found on base. If you're looking for a church home there's a great biracial church named Light of the World Ministries located on Hwy 84 towards Dothan (it also has a great daycare if you need it).

I have actually been to both. Currently at Fort Rucker for a second time as my husband is assigned here. Both he and I were assigned to Fort Hood (before I got out of the Army) and I grew up in Austin.

Comparing Fort Hood to Fort Rucker is like comparing apples to oranges. Hood is HUGE. Rucker is small-town. Both have their pros and cons. If by partying you mean going to clubs and such, I would think you would like Hood better. Austin is about an hour away and has pretty much anything you could want. Dallas and San Antonio are both do-able as day trips, or weekend get-aways.

If you like the beach, then Fort Rucker might be something to consider as you would be two hours away from the Gulf of Mexico via Panama City Beach or Destin. Also, Atlanta is about 3 hours away from Rucker and you can find tons to do there.

Good luck and I hope you get what you want.
