Is it a canister type like an automotive filter? Located in the fuel line? Try an automobile oil filter wrench. And when putting on the new one...only tighten about a quarter turn once the gasket seats.

Yes, cannister etc. I didn't know if a filter wrench would help but guess at this point, I'm willing to try anything! I can't go back into town now but will first thing in the morning. The oven is keeping it warm enough that at least we aren't seeing our breath. I've got the bedroom curtained off. Thanks.

If you need to...hammer a screwdriver into the side of the canister and use that as a handle. Just try to catch any diesel that will run out of the filter. Make sure you've closed the valve on the tank so you don't have the hole tank try to unload on you!
Also...try to fill the new filter before you put it on. Might save some heartache with the monitor shutting down due to air in the line.

Thanks Rance. I also "got" to learn how to bleed my lines. Not difficult once someone told me how. Toasty warm again and now working on two days of dishes that piled up. Ugh.
