Hate to sound like a broken record, but thats some good advice about school. I did things the hard way, moved in with my girlfriend the week after I turned 18, told the folks that I was gonna do it my way.

Long story short, it set me back at least ten years catching up to the income level that I could have made if I'd have just stayed at home and finished college the first time around. Long story short, I ended up working the graveyard shift at UPS just to be able to afford to stay in school. Ended up joining the Army for the college money, finally finished my bachelors about a half-dozen years later than I should have.

Its been an adventure for sure, but if I was to do it all again I'd just have swallowed my pride and lived with the folks a bit longer. I'll end up working many years longer before I can retire because I was too hard headed to get along with the parents, so its going to cost me in more ways than I'd have thought.

Of course, if you weren't planning on going to school anyway you might as well just apply at Taco Bell and get used to being poor for the rest of your life.

I think I read somewhere that ladyscorpian is planning to go to college in Anchorage. This conversation seems to be recycled from some earlier threads.

I barely finished highschool. Was supporting myself really from age 17 or so. At 18 I moved out, and worked my way into the military for 6 years. Came home and went right into construction and commercial fishing. After some rough times of selling firewood for a living I managed to step into the oilfeild and never looked back. Now that I think of it...I would not change a thing. I have some great life experiences and do as well as any of my buddies that spent 4 or 5 years in college. It can be done. Sure there are struggles along the way, but it can be done. You gotta want it!

Default not sure

I'm not sure that just "emancipating" yourself from your folks makes any difference as far as the student aid/grants/loans go. It's worth getting a very solid answer about that before you legally commit to something so permanent. I've never heard of anyone being "un-emancipated", for what that's worth.

I may be jumping to an unwarranted conclusion, but then, maybe not.

Rance, U and I are in an entirely different shoes than the subject. I am assuming she is female.

We both came from a school of hard knocks. I've ran away from home at 15 an join the AF at 19. GI bill saved me

.

I think if U go by Prez Lincoln's term, I believe emancipation meant freedom from slavery from a master. In the case of the subject, I assume she meant complete freedom from her folks. If that was not the case, my humble apologies
