Hopefully getting to Alaska in 2008 for vacation. Regarding Juneau, does the city have a monument for the USS Juneau sunk during WWII? I've heard they have and would like to see it as my Uncle was KIA on this ship..

Thanks

Not that I know of, sorry.

Are you coming on a cruise ship or as an independent traveller?

Default on the waterfront

"The USS Juneau Memorial, located at the cruise ship dock on the waterfront area, commemorates the sinking of the U.S.S. Juneau, a light cruiser (CL-52) during WW II.
The concrete monument consists of a base for a flagpole and 3 sections with brass plaques, one inscribed with the names of the crew who were lost and one containing a description of the sinking of the ship....."

Wow... how did I miss that? I was just down there yesterday!
The docks are pretty sealed off, because of "security threats" to the cruise ships should us dangerous locals come near.

I went down to the cruise ship docks yesterday, just to see this. I couldn't for the life of me find it. It looks like it's in front of the tram, but I'm fairly certain I would have noticed it, having been in that area several times this week...
I found a cool memorial to commercial fishermen that echoes when you stand in the center, (got some funny looks when I started rocking out in it) but no USS Juneau memorial... Could it have been (re)moved?

The picture in the link is the Archie Van Winkle Memorial...

The USS Juneau memorial is a flag pole base with 3 brass plaques. Did you notice a flag pole in the area?
