Just had to come in to warm up a bit. The lights are amazing tonight. I've taken loads of photos, playing with settings.

No wind around Fairbanks. I missed the brightest Auroras, which took place for around 15 minutes at 11:30 PM. I am getting my camera ready, and all of the sudden several people drove their automobiles next to mine, lights glaring and all. By the time they settled down the best had passed us by.

But I still manage to take around 86 photos at another location earlier in the night, although the Northern Lights were not as bright. The ones around 11:30 were amazing, dancing around and showing different colors.

Still blowing a gale out there, and oh, the lights are still putting a good show.

they were pretty nice around here. the wind did make things a bit cold, but we got a good half-hour of watching in. i took some photos but i doubt they turned out (just a little digital camera).

i was even watching them from my bedroom window as i was getting into bed.

Same here. I was futzing with my camera when the really bright ribbons were directly overhead here in ANC, but then they died down and the rest of the night was fainter and more diffuse. I still got some pretty good pictures though, just need to work on them when I get home later.

You can take long exposures on some point-n-shot cameras, but you still have to place it on a tripod or something so it won't move when it takes the photo.

Interesting, they are saying the CME that hit last night was "weak". Can't wait for a strong one!

Quote:
CME IMPACT: A coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth's magnetic field on March 10th around 0630 UT. The impact, albeit weak, did provoke geomagnetic activity around the poles. High-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras.
