Should be fine as long as you have ammo for it, since it's rare at the local stores.

I'm not in Alaska but think its safe to say 300 Savage is fairly rare anyplace. Its a great caliber that just isn't very popular. Shouldn't be a big deal to get though. I'd think any shop could order it for him or he can get it himself online. Be cheaper to get a shop to order a case with his next order though I'd think. Even better would be to start reloading IMO but I dont know how much you guys shoot.

Yes. But it should not be a problem if you can reload for it. Why not a .30-06?

Is .300 Win Mag not commonly available in AK?

300 WM is available where I'm at (but then we have a local ammo company), it's just the OP wanted something that "wouldn't knock her on her butt" that was big enough for moose. 300WM is a good round, but in spruce forests around where I am it's overkill for moose. 308 Win or 30-06 or 270 Win is more than enough with less recoil. You're not going to be shooting most moose at any particularly long ranges in general around here its 50 yards or less, you can't see any further than that and often quite a lot less.

Plus there's enough pain packing the beastie out, no need to add to it with excessive recoil that's going to be lying right under that pack strap.

MY .270 is made by Browning, an A-Bolt, it came with the B.O.S.S. already on it, I didn't think I needed something to dampen recoil on such a light load, but, danged if it doesn't shoot sweetly. I took the time to tune the B.O.S.S. in and can consistently shoot nickle sized five shot groups at 250 yds. The B.O.S.S. (Ballistic Optimizing Shooting System) works quite well if you take the time and ammunition to tune it in correctly. I have a Burris 1.5 X 6 signature series scope that I have taken the time and ammunition to fine tune. My normal shot on Deer, whitetail, don't have Mule Deer in N.C. usually go out to about 250 yds, I am comfortable at that range. I sit in a comfortable chair under a really big Oak Tree at the top of a small hill and look out over a very large calf pasture with more Oaks and Persimmons and a creek 280 yds away. I have a forked stick, I wrapped an ace bandage in the crook to cushion my fore-end grip. I will say that I gut the animal in the field, no need to drag out the internal organs when I'm dragging the deer that far out of the field to the road. Sometimes, if it is dry enough, I drive my truck to the deer, then drive out (my preferred method).

Yes, but I imagine that most women, and a lot of men don't enjoy the recoil it produces.
