The new Goose Creek correctional facility is scheduled for opening in 2012, with a predicted operating cost of $70 million per year. The cost to just send the same prisoners to facilities in the south-48 is projected to be $20 million per year. IE: the new facility will be more than three times as expensive to operate. So now they are considering completing the project and then immediately placing the entire facility into mothballs. (a REAL bridge to nowhere)
Well...DUH! We might as well have dumped millions of state dollars into a big huge pile, and tossed a match! And now we are going to spend millions more every year maintaining a facility that won't be used?
Don't our lawmakers count and evaluate the cost of these projects, before starting them?

I was disheartened by this as well. Can't imagine they would have gone into this without a feasibility. Hope there is an investigation into how it got this far before somebody realized the expense.

To state the obvious, because you can't [hold them accountable]. They are allowed to waste money. That's part and parcel of the process we call "politics," and excluding some very narrowly confined strictures, they are free to act with carefree abandon, they can act with impunity and immunity in wasting as much money as their little hearts desire. And all these things are given the big ol' stamp of imprimatur by those who believe in the concept of governance in its widely practiced form.

The extent of ones de jour recourse in these matters, such as it is, is a farcical at best. The citizens recourse has virtually no teeth, or they amount to a babies teeth, at best. That's the system the overwhelming majority of society claims to believe in, so they perhaps deserve every bad thing they have coming to them for their lack of foresight in not truly understanding what politics is.

If Donald Trump runs for president, I'm gonna vote for him. We have a whole bunch of politicians that need to be FIRED!

Bud...follow the money.

If the prison is built, they need the bridge. And after they build the bridge, who are the land owners close by.

The CBC is not extinct, just a little more stealthy.

You can't, except by voting.

Most have their own agenda, and have been bought and paid for.

Interesting... Politicians are accountable to the Citizens they represent... VOTE EM OUT if you don't like what they are doing. Although the problem is that the next person in line may not be much better....
