Crime is everywhere these days and can turn up anywhere. One of the nicest neighborhoods in my hometown had a shooting involving a drug trafficking operation. People were shocked. Not being lulled into believing an area is safe is your best bet. Be aware of your surroundings, lock doors and carry some type of defense (mace, gun, club/flashlight, etc) and you are pretty much good to go in most areas.

I agree... Crime is everywhere, sometimes it can be worse in smaller population areas with less or no law enforcement presence. Best advice is what Totek said... Although if you are going to carry a gun, make sure you take classes and are very comfortable handling one.

Thanks for the info but are you saying there is no significant difference in crime in the bush as compared to the cities there? I know crime is everywhere here in my county but there are places where it is worse. I'm trying to decide if I should focus on teaching in the bush now or come in to a more civilized area first. The crime difference would be somewhat of a factor for me, if there is one.

The crime rate is lower in the villages. Just because they are remote doesn't mean they aren't civilized.

Yes, crime can happen anywhere, and sometimes it happens in rural/remote Alaska. But I have never felt the need to go around armed there. In fact, I've never felt safer from human crimes than in remote Alaska.
