You dont need a passport to fly state to state incl alaska & hawaii. Its stupid that a passport is required now to get into canada & mexico + passports arent inexpensive anymore. The govt made sure of that.

What I find to be stupid is that if you fly over a dry county in the U.S. they take your glass of hooch away while you are in that county's airspace.
Ok, fair. Didn't think of the plane going over Canada and might give him the impression that he'd have to have a visa to get to Alaska.

No way! Really? I don't drink while I'm up in the air but never have heard or seen that...ok, I'll believe you..are you serious, though???

Yeah, serious....though from what I can gather, that particular regulation is somehow specific to dry counties in Kansas; there was some kind of weird lawsuit or something about it a few years ago. I posted a linky concerning it a page or two back.

You actually need the passport more to get back IN to the USA. Most Canadian boarder crossings will let you in to Canada with no issue. (sorry I have no recent experience with Mexico)

How much are passports now? Last I checked they were $100 each. Family of 7, that's not inexpensive.

OK...so on the very off chance that our ex gov ends up in the White House in '12, I can slip into Canada without a passport and they won't let me back in the U.S.? Sweet.

Seriously I don't think it's the case anymore but there is so much confusion out there about it.

Passport cards can be gotten a lot cheaper than traditional passports and they are good for travel between countries that border the United States.

I think it was 2009 that the law was made by the president that you had to have a passport by 6/1 that year for both Canada and the U.S. I remember cause they pulled us aside (Canadian border) because MIL didn't have passport and it was 5/30. The agent said 'as of 6/1 she needs passport otherwise she won't enter Canada and that is your president's ruling, not ours." She only had drivers license at the time. So I don't advise trying to enter Canada or the U.S. without a passport.

That doesn't sound right. Disregarding the fact that the US president can't really do things by decree, it's up to Canada who they let in, not the US.

I would guess that the US probably asked Canada to make sure US citizens entering Canada who plan on re-entering the US (which does require a passport) aren't going to strand themselves in Canada. Or Canada was concerned about people stranding themselves there.

They always were concerned with this even before 6/1/09.

Actually, I think the reason you need a passport to re-enter the US after entering Canada is to increase the population of Canada. They have so much land after all and need more people. It's a trap...kind of like a one way valve, you can enter anytime you want...but you can't ever leave.
