Noted that Sitka has more luxury higher end homes than in Skagway. It seems to me Sitka is back to nature on island kind of way of life. Skagway is it's own vast small city with lots of tourists with older type small size homes on big lots. Skagway is a city lots of shops, dinning places and quick ferry or plane ride over to capital city Juneau. I think people should value more to city of Skagway. I still don't get why Sitka has more higher class homes. Can anyone shed more light to this?

Sitka is home to a Coast Guard Base, the Alaska State Trooper training academy and a Pioneers Homes. More year round jobs that are not tourist dependent.

Pretty much was stiffbrain said. Skagway doesn't have a lot of year round jobs; their population is actually declining. For those who can find work though it's a good place to live.

Sitka gets all the subatomic breaks. Maybe Skagway can establish a laundry processing operation for the cruise ship industry. Hire about 40 seasonal workers and 10 for year round.

cruise ships have their own laundry operation on board so that would put lots of people already employed on the ship out of work...gotta do lots more research when thinking up ideas!

Skagway has the land to build laundry complex for the cruise line industry. "storage complex".
