what were the reasons why you moved to alaska (home, living in)

God brought us to Alaska as missionaries. Thank you God, it is beautiful, we love it and the native people. I believe Alaska is God's favorite place also, can't imagine ever leaving.

Hope you make it up here, at least for a vacation. Once you have been here you will be looking for ways to come back.

I was born and raised in Alaska. I'm the opposite. I love traveling down to the lesser 48 states. I have about 30 more states to go to say i've been to all 50! I had a great trip down this past month down the Alcan and back. My mind is on another road trip probably in April to Montana again. This past trip we went to Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Utah and back north to Alaska. My mind is always on the Alcan, I love it. If you have never driven it yet, its certainly a must do!

Condor Air has flights out of Germany direct to Fairbanks, Maybe you can visit next summer for low cost?

Thank You Arcticthaw - I will check them out if I am still in Europe. We'll probably be back stateside by April though.

We have decided to take a few weeks and check out, Anchorage, Fairbaknks and the Peninsula 'cause like I said I'll be there (somewhere) by 2010. Not sure if we will drive the ALCAN or fly in and rent RV. I am so glad to have found this forum and will be writing asking advice for the next few years

I was born "out in the islands," and remember being amazed the first time I saw Anchorage as a young child. My family later moved away, but I have known other people who moved TO Alaska from the mainland. They seem to be seeking more 'freedom' and open space. I hope they know what they are getting into, though. Freedom only works when you have the skill and tenacity to make it work. Otherwise, the freedom you get in rural Alaska can operate more like a prison, isolating you, especially in the winter.

Well living in a town you have social interaction with others. You can jump in the car and drive to check mail or shop or restraunts etc. In rural/bush life you will/may not have those options. Cold, dark, nothing to do or no one to talk to, so to speak...can drive some people postal in a matter of weeks.

My husband was born here once he rotated out of the service we came up for a vacation that was in 1975 still here. I was raised in Long Beach California and came with him to Seward Alaska. Now in Anchorage where there is a bit more to city life living.

I tell everyone who has a desire to visit Alaska but haven't yet, to see the rest of the world first and make Alaska your last stop. Once you've been to Alaska everywhere else will appear dull and dreary.

Urban Alaskan = Lives within the city limits;
Rural Alaskan = Lives outside the city limits with road access; and
Bush Alaskan = Has no road access.
