Are There Oil & Gas Jobs in Alaska-Fact or Fiction? (motels, job market)

Hello! I'm an unemployed Civil Engineer looking for work in the oil and gas industry, originally from the Philadelphia Eastcoast now living and checking out job market in Oklahoma City and nearby Texas. The entire North American job market is open game for me with the exception of Mexico. Could someone let me know if indeed there are a good number of oil and gas related jobs in Alaska at this time? I'm hearing that the major gas pipeline projects in Alaska may be on hold or not very active, whether it's environmental, political or a drop in the price of natural gas causing the down turn.

I'd appreciate any comments or views of those working in the Alaska oil and gas industry about the strength of this industry.

Chesapeake or Devon in Oklahoma City would be your best bet. If you've done your research then you'd know the answer on the proposed Alaska gas pipeline.

Actually, North Dakota would be the best place I can think of, at least in relation to work in the oil industry. Unemployment, at least two months ago was somewhere around 3% (the highest employment rate in the nation).

If you're looking for an oil boom job, North Dakota is where you should set your sights. Alaska's oil industry is well-established so they've already had time to attract a sufficient employment pool. North Dakota is just now ramping up and demand for labor is very high.

Thanks for the feedback, yes Western ND is a possibility for oil and gas as long as one can find a place to live there. I just confirmed that with calling motels in that region other day, almost impossible to find quartering unless lucky to find a place in one of the company mancamps. Housing construction there cannot keep up pace with demands.

My understanding of the Alaska Pipeline Project, it's not in ground breaking yet but when it does happen, those with construction and affiliated engineering backgrounds will have plenty of work. This project will be one of the largest private contract projects in all of North America, perhaps the world.

But if you look at the number of years Alaska law makers and the public have been talking about a gas or any other pipeline, you will realize that it may never materialize.
