Default A simple Inupiaq Dancer !

As with any project that you desire to make; First it begins with any piece of material; then draw the shape you want to make!

For this next item we are going to make a simple dancer!

Once you have the shape. Now remove everything that doesn't belong to that shape. Smooth out the rough edges and begin to add 'detail'.

I've got plenty of photos to post - to show step by simple step how this is turned into a beautiful work of art.

The smaller a carving is & the more detail that is added is what sets a much higher price.

I'm sure you will be extremely impressed at the delicate fingers on this carving.

Remove the excess ivory that doesn't belong to the figure you are making.

Here we go with a very long list of images that show step by step how this was accomplished. Practice is all it takes. Take a small piece of wood. Draw a horse on the side view and the top view would be a different shape.

It doesn't matter what you draw. Remove all the excess that doesn't belong to the shape you are making. Detail takes time & practice to learn... but you will learn in very short order. To tell the truth. This next figurine is only about the 5th or 6th one that Mark has ever attempted.

Lots more to follow.. ..

Remove the ivory that doesn't belong to the finished shape. Add detail slowly;using a pencil to mark the areas to be cut down and refined.

adding detail slowly to the 'character'. block out an area and begin to add the necessary detail. The next set of images will show the results (over time)

Much more to follow...

Continuing onward.. ..

Do you see the little oval drawing on a piece of ivory with 5 little circles (sort of). Just to the right of the black coffee cup. That is Mark's next project - a 1 1/2" ivory umiaq with 5 hunters inside!!

These are some of the many different types of cutting/burring bits we use to cut, smooth, shape etc.

The final set of images is coming up.

More steps to the final finished carving.

Cutting or shaping the ivory to conform to your "image" or idea.

Using sandpaper to smooth out the ivory in certain areas. It can be done by hand or using a dremel which is much faster.

Sanding and smoothing portions of the carving to suit your vision.

This existed only in Mark's imagination when he first began. Now it is slowly coming to life right before your eyes.

More work needs to be finished.. the best is coming up.
