Great pictures Ray... I saw some amazing auroras up here, but my pictures just don't turn out. Any suggestions? Should I get a better camera and set the exposure for longer? Care to share any tips?

Tell me what camera you use, and lens' aperture range. Maybe I can come-up with some ideas.

I have just a simple point and shoot camera. I take it I need the kind with the separate lens' so I can adjust more things?

The thing is that you have to take long exposures to capture the lights. But a friend of mine used a point and shoot camera that has a manual setting, and too pictures of the Auroras during moose season. The photos weren't outstanding, but good enough for show and tell. If yours has a manual setting where you can control the exposure, see if it can do at least 10 seconds and longer. You still need mount it on a tripod or a place that's solid and does not move or shake.

Now, you can take your time and later buy a digital entry level camera, since you will have plenty of opportunities to view the Auroras. I take photos of the Auroras from September through March, and sometimes until mid April. When the time comes that you want to buy a digital SLR camera, I can certainly help you set it up for taking photos of the Auroras.

Thanks! I don't believe I can adjust any exposure on my point and shoot, it's a bit dated. Hopefully I can find a good deal on a DSLR camera one of these days... Keep the good pictures coming.

Thanks for posting these, folks. We've had even less winter in Texas than usual and it's bumming me out. Me and my magyar wife want to wear our wools and felts, darn it!

6.7 Check out Best By - at times they clearance DSLRS out even the nicer Nikon's. I don't know what you budget is. I keep looking at them as I want a better camera myself.
