There are rumours that Canon is updating that lens with both better optics and the latest generation of IS. I would wait until the PMA to be held in March before any purchase.

Default skating on Chilkoot lake

Better late than never, eh? Here's a couple shots from last month, around Christmas. The ice on Chilkoot lake was unusually thick and smooth, covered with millions of clusters of huge frost clusters but no snow. It was perfect for skating, but still sorta creepy with those booming, echoing noises from down below. This part of the lake is hundreds of feet deep.

And here is one of the frost crystal clusters, about the size of a tennis ball. The lake was covered with them, especially around the cracks that had frozen shut earlier. The individual crystals were over an inch across, delicate and feathery. I would have loved to get a better shot, but that time of year the sun never touches the lake surface and the light was fairly poor. They were far too delicate to carry, and the flash shots turned out even worse. Still pretty good for low-light macro work with a compact point&shoot.

I wish we'd have gotten out skating more than just the one day, but the next week it snowed pretty heavily and then warmed up into the 40s and rained all over the snow...bummer.

The trick is, wait until the PMA... and when everyone else starts trading in the old ones for the new one, snap up a good deal on an old one!
