I believe the D40 does not have a focusing motor so the lenses must be AF-S lenses or else you'll be all manual focusing.
That's true. A D90 would be a much better choice than a D40.

Yeah, but the whole setup for the D40 including lense I can get for $400 brand new. The D90 is found cheapest at $890 and that is body only. I'm just looking to get my first DSLR setup and unload my Nikon N60 rig to get into the digital world, nothing to turn professional with. If money wasn't an issue....

For $99.00 more you can get this one:
Canon | EOS Rebel XS (a.k.a. 1000D) SLR Digital | 2762B003 | B&H

You can see a side by side comparison of the XS and D60 in this forum. While the Nikon D60 may be slightly more advanced than the D40, it still has the same lens problem you will encounter with the D40. But if can afford buying AF-S lenses for it, it should not be a problem (don't worry about it, and get the D40) or D60).

Agreed! I believe that Alaska and Chukotka are unique and beautiful regions of the world. Here are a two views of Anadyr (but in the summer), which I call "my cozy lair" ...

We have some really nice Russian architecture here that is really neat!

Some of the older Russian Churches in Southeast Alaska and out into the Aleutian Chain there is some really nice examples.
