Mainly just bigger. Although the first plane to fly through a hurricane was a T-6 Texan, which is about the size of a 172 only beefier.

They used to use P-2 Orion's which was based on the Electra. If you have ever flown in one (Reeve Aleutian Airways) you know the wings rocked. I can't imagine flying in one of those through a hurricane. NOAA now use C-130's, P-3 Orion's and Gulfstream jets for the flights.

Awesome picture! And by awesome I mean totally awesome! I didn't get to see any lighting but the thunder was nice to hear again.
I got the lawn mowed and we had a good hour of heavy rain. So the garden and all is watered. Man it was dry when I got home.
