Love the kids...put kids next to water and rocks nearby they just have to pick
them up and toss them in.

Thanks...the younger one is only 17 months old, it's weird how they know not to walk in the water without telling them.

Yep, it's wired in.

An interesting look at what is at work there can be done with two tables and some plexiglas between them. A baby that has just learned to crawl will very happily crawl right out onto the plexiglas with no hesitation at all. At some point (and I don't remember what age it was) virtually all babies will almost over night develop a sense for depth of field and whatever else is going on, and will stop at the edge of the table and just won't crawl go where there is no visible means of support.

Not walking on water is just an extension of that, I think. Of course in another year or so he'll learn that he can walk on the bottom, and splash in the water... and won't miss a single mud puddle!

Think they have that sense of self preservation from the unknown.
Also maybe deep down they think "toss in the rock and it's gone...I go in I'm gone too!)
Love when kids confront things they've never seen. My neighbors are from
Indonesia and the year they arrived it was a snowy one for NJ.
After we had about a foot of snow fall everyone was out shoveling sidewalks
and dusting off the cars. Their kids were paralyzed over going into the snow, they would walk as far as the shoveled path and then stop.
Finally they went in after following my dog who bounced past and leaped into
the shoveled up drifts. It was funny seeing that.
Almost as funny as watching them shovel with baking pans (I did donate a shovel to their cause).

Floyd I saw the video of that study. Believe it was called the "visual cliff".
Babies would crawl across the glass toward their mothers with no fear
until they were about 6 mos-1 year old. Then depth perception came into play and
no toys or mom's call would get them on the glass.
It was interesting.

Went up to Hatcher Pass yesterday evening to check out the snow.
On the way back down, the sun was starting to set.
