I am, too!!

I've had plans to move to south central Alaska for a while despite only having researched it. I plan to visit at least once before I make a permanent move, but I'm pretty sure about it just from reading. I won't have a financial cushion, so I'll be looking at the cheapest place to start off with. I mean, I'll have some money saved up, but I'll probably have Anchorage as an "Ellis Island," and then decide what to do next once I've learned the ropes. If I don't like the "big city," Eagle River seems like the next choice. I'm from a small town, so I'm unsure about if Anchorage is too much bustle for me or not. Anchorage would be all I could afford if I go as soon as possible. It's in the right region of Alaska, at least...

I will say this, though...

If I were designing a bigger city, I would plan it a lot like Anchorage.

I moved back in 2005 to fairbanks without visiting and i've never regret it. Though my expectations were a bit different, i love living here. I only did research and my friends and family called me crazy when i explained them my plans. And now im living in Fairbanks and it's a great place to live!

Alaska is a best city for live for three reasons: (1) median household income (adjusted for cost of living); (2) educational attainment (% of residents 25 years and over who have earned a bachelor's degree or higher); and (3) property crime rates per 1,000 residents (burglary and automobile thefts).

Do you know you have to heat with Diesel Fuel everywhere! IT is OMG expensive! We live in Sitka for a short time (in a rental house) and it was upwards of $900 a month. It was absolutely the most beautiful place in the world! We loved it there and then we moved to Hawaii. I would choose Alaska over Hawaii any day. But expensive doesn't even begin to cover it. It is over $10.00 for a gallon of milk. $9.00 for a package of Kraft American Cheese. So get ready to have a HUGE grocery bill. In fact, there isn't much to do but look at the scenery, hike, fish, outdoor living, but after you purchase food, you can't afford to do anything!

South east Alaska has notoriously horrible weather for most of the year. I have heard that when its nice its beautiful but I have never see it because its so rare. I bought a plane in Sitka and it took me 7 months!!! to retrieve it because of weather. If you go during say oct and still love it you could look at places like Gustavus too, my ferry pilot had to get fuel there.

I live in Sitka and it is beautiful no matter what the weather does! I see planes fly most everyday and they aren't all jetliners. As for milk, paid like 4.89 a half gallon like two days ago. Yeah, its expensive here but...we love it. I'm not in the habit of asking people how much they pay in utilities, we burn wood and have electric back up and do just fine. We pay 1800/mth all said but live on the water, have decent neighbors, and life is good.
