So its more of a collection of stores close together rather than an enclosed structure with a food court & a bunch of stores that sell womens' clothing?

Hubby doesn't like traditional malls so a cluster of stores are would be fine with him.

I'm sitting here in your home state and it is 34 degrees (for those that don't know that is cold for SC). I'm freezing even though the heat is on. I'm from Chicago so I have an idea of what cold is but to me Interior Alaska is just too extreme. I wish you luck in your journey and I look forward to following your progress. Will you continue to post once you get settled in your new home?

Yeah people that haven't ever lived anywhere else think this is the most fridgid temps. But I think what gets us most is the near 70 temps and then the drops and then back up again.

Yes,I plan to continue to post I know that for the first few weeks I won't have internet but hopefully somewhere in Fairbanks has a WIFI hotspot so I can log on there with my laptop. And when we stop at a hotel I will try and post as well.

Thanks for sharing your story megensmom it has been fun to read. BTW, I'm Megan's mom too!

One thing I read to do when we moved from Chicago was to take all the cards in your wallet and make a copy of all of it and keep with the important papers you are carrying.

Plenty of hotspots to link up to in Fairbanks--find any walk-in coffee shop for the most part. Of course, most hotels/motels have something, too.

I was actually going to fly over to Central and Circle Hot Springs yesterday (and take some pics of the area while my copilot tried not get lost). As luck would have it, my helo was being hot swapped with my unit's (medical air ambulance) off coming 1st up (standby crew that is always at the hangar). They ended up having a mission out to Chena Hot Springs just as I was arriving to work...scrambling just to find a bird for me for three hours and I gave up any thoughts of flying--fun meter was pegged.

Perhaps in a week or so (wx / schedule dependent). If I DO get up there in the daylight, I'll post the pics. Obviously no promises, but I'll attempt it.

I've been away for awhile---have enjoyed updating.
Yes, there are several wi-fi hotspots in Fairbanks. You shouldn't have any trouble there.

I can't belive we don't even have 30 days left till we leave. It seems as though time has just flew by. Last night as my washer and dryer was leaving I thought man this is really happening and soon. There will be things I miss here but there are things that I totally hate. When we lived in NC we would go out fishing on Sunday or throw some stuff on the grill and just sit out and look around at the woods. We would go every evening to the waterfall on our property and play around getting our showers as well. No water I have seen since then beats it and it was so clear and tasted so good. Now we have smelly bleach city water. We didn't have to worry about people stealing our stuff,it was safe for the kids to leave their bikes outside unchained. Now it seems we are always looking for something to do and everything costs money. No more just going to the woods and walking. And the polution reports have you to scared to even eat fish if you do go to the lake and catch some. I miss things that we used to do and I think this will really be a blessing to our family. I can't wait for our vacation to include one of the National Parks or the adventures we can have walking in the woods just exploring.

Sure did. We bought the place when he took a job with Kellogg Brown and Root AKA Haliburton. We loved it but after the job ended there just wasn't any jobs in the area that would allow us to even pay the bills and I was pregnant so we decided to sell and move back to SC. Didn't want to but with a family of 5 McDonalds pay wasn't going to support us.
The waterfall slid down the mountain but there was this part that was easy to get to where it dropped off the rocks about 10ft above some huge rocks and we would go there. It was wonderful but dang if it wasn't cold, I think I miss that the most of all.
We had always wanted to move to Alaska but the fear of getting scammed kept us from it. So this is really a dream for us.
