We just had a small quake at 7:02 AM. It only lasted about 5 seconds, so it could not have been that far away. From my location (near Settler's Bay) it felt like it was somewhere in the 4.5 to 5.0 range.

I felt it, too! I was about half asleep, and it took me a second to figure out what was happening.

If they are under 5.0 in magnitude, I actually enjoy them.

It reminds me how nature can dwarf the power we are capable of generating. It helps puts into proper perspective the human species. We like to think we can control and manipulate our environment, but nature could undo everything we create without much effort.

It is when they get to 5.0 magnitude or above that they become a concern, and I am less interested in contemplating our insignificance.

I especially hated them when I was at work in a multi-storied building on rollers. I did fear another big one when I lived there.

Yes anything above 5.0 scares the living he** out of me. I worry about the big one.

My flight to Fairbanks had literally just gone wheels-up so I missed it! But my wife reported it definitely got her attention.

Even got picked up on my Earthquake monitoring page. At least I know it works!

You can take comfort in knowing that we had a pretty big shaker in November 2002. A 7.9 magnitude quake near Denali. That was the biggest quake since the 9.2 magnitude 1964 "Good Friday" shaker. So it is not likely that we will see another 7.5 magnitude or greater quake in our area for another 20 to 30 years.

One thing that is absolutely certain: It will happen. The only question is when and where.
