I decided to visit friends in Thorne Bay on POW for Thanksgiving - about 50 miles west of here - but you can't get there from here. First a 6-hour ferry ride south to Ketchikan $108, then a 6-hour ferry ride west to POW $242, then a 2-hour drive on dirt roads at $4.89 a gallon for gas - and I'm finally in Thorne Bay.
You folks down south should never complain about the price of getting from one town to the other
Anybody in Thorne Bay want to visit?

Aw, thanks freezengirl! Good thing I like staying home but I haven't been off this rock in 2 years so I'm excited to make the trip and connect with old friends. Jeep's loaded, I'm ready! My favorite adult grandkids are going with and we have too much fun together.

I haven't been on the island in over a year or I'd meet up with ya...CC is down here too.
It was nice having the Inter-island Ferry thing when we had it, wasn't it? I wish that idea would have stuck.

Oh, you know it. Only in Alaska is the 'highway' closed because it doesn't make a profit. I loved making the run from here to Coffman and back just to take the ride and have lunch onboard. That gal ran a great little kitchen.

I guess only in Alaska can a town 50 miles away cost so much to get to and take 14+ hours to do it.
