The sun set on Barrow back on November 18th, and won't come up again until January 23rd. That doesn't bother locals much, but it's always a topic of importance to new comers, visitors, and anyone thinking of coming here. Indeed, the longer winter nights seem to be of major concern to people coming to almost anywhere in the northern half of Alaska.

So it has occurred to me that specifically photographing Barrow's darkness, from November 18th through January 23rd, would be a fun project and would be useful information for people searching the web and finding articles here on C-D.

Today I posted the first set of images to a gallery titled "Barrow After the Sun Goes Down" on my webpage:

Barrow After the Sun Goes Down

I'll post a couple of example images now, and perhaps others later:
There is no lack of light in Barrow when the sun is down. We light up the night with street lights, and there simply are no "dark alleys". But there are porch lights, twilight, and vehicle headlights to provide light too; and all of it is "directional" and the most significant characteristic is a dark sky and lots of shadows.

Tracks in the snow, paths, steps, and stairways all provide fascinating shadows.

Although the sun doesn't come up above the Horizon, you might post a few photos of what mid day is like with the twilight for those that don't know what the "Day" there looks like.

And be sure to get a few shots of all those vampires roaming the streets of Barrow as well! LOL.
