Just curious, among Alaskans, how common is support for the idea of officially renaming Mt McKinley to Denali? Almost every mountain enthusiast I know uses the name Denali when referring to the peak, but I wonder what the bulk of local opinion is.

For the locals it has always been and will always be Denali.

I'm more worried about the US dollar now being worth less then the Canadian dollar. Now $1US gets you 98 cents Canadian. As for the mountain, Denali/McKinley, it's all the same to me. Either way I know what you're talking about.

Lots of locals just call it "the Mountain."

I use the two names interchangeably. I'm sure many do.

That's what many of us Seattleites call Mt. Rainier.

It seems to me that it's already named Denali to most people other than tourists and the National Board of Geographic Names, so I don't know if "renaming" is even the right word for it.

I don't care one way or the other, "a rose by any other name" and all that.

I say we make some money on this deal and do a corporate sponsorship. "Denali, brought to you Pepsi" or "Denali, the Red Bull of Mountains." The dilemma there is who gets the money? It's a National Park, so would it be the federal government? Or would the State of Alaska get the money?
Hey, maybe this is how we can make up for declining oil production... Just think... "The Subaru Alcan Highway" or the "Duracell Copper Top River".

Don't forget McDonald's "McKinley Mac". Only sold in Alaska. All proceeds go to Ronald.
