My work doesn't allow for me to be a full-time Alaskan.. unfortunately. But having spent some time recently in several areas of the state, I can safely say I'd love to live in Bettles - crazy as that might sound - I know it's remote, and cold in the winter. And a population of 12 according to the 2010 census.

Anyway - does anyone have info on living there? I get the feeling (not from anyone in particular, just a gut feeling) that they'd frown on "city folk" living part-time there - true or unfounded?
Is there even property for sale there or do you really need to build you own place?

I know I'd be very happy having a part-time Alaskan retreat to escape to when I can; to just kick back and enjoy the scenery, and of course go hiking in the area as well. But I don't want to **** off people by doing that when I know the full-time residents work very hard just to survive.

Hyder, that's where you should try. I noticed a few places for sale when I was there. I'd kinda like to have a summer place there.

When I have more time I'll go into more detail. It's just a neat place to live.

I lived in Bettles more than 30 years ago. I liked it. Mighty cold in the winter though. Talked to some folks from there this summer and some of the same people are still there.

If I lived there in the summer I would want a small boat to explore some of the rivers. A little jon boat with a surface drive would be perfect.

In fact, It would be better just to get the boat and forget the house. Get a nice tent and spend the summer on the rivers. You have the Koyukuk, John River, South Fork, and Alatna River just for starters. All really nice country---in the summer. All really cold country in the winter. I was there mostly in the winter

Well for starters you'd need to move there. Having an income is nice as well. But there isn't anything that really would stop you from moving if that is where you want to be at.

Like Starlite says, you really need to go there. There is very little private property in Bettles, but there is some. The best way to find out about it would be to take a trip there. Book a week at the lodge and talk to everyone in town. Many of the sales are done neighbor to neighbor.

You might call this person.
