When the general economy tanks from the politicians spending all of our money to buy votes and pork projects that truly serve nobody but political "Buddies", it really won't matter where you want to go, you'll be broke there too.

I agree government has a tendency to kick the can down the road on problems until they become a crisis and can't be avoided any more. There are certainly some financial land mines waiting for us in a few years.

That said, it is always possible to create opportunities for yourself and thrive, even in difficult times. There have always been and will always be obstacles, so don't let problems like the above dissuade you. It can take years to learn how to create the opportunity you really want, so the sooner you start the better, it's never too early. If you actively work on it every day you WILL find ways to succeed and be happy. Actively working on it every day without fail is the key

Never give in

Here is the way I look at it - when the economy totally tanks where do I want to be?

It'll be bad everywhere.

I'm with everyone else... if times are going to be hard, I'd at least want to be living someplace I enjoyed being. Uncle Sam has you over the barrel, it's just going to suck that much more if you're miserable where you're at on top of it.

if the excrement should actually strike the blades of the rotating apparatus, ask yourself if you want to be living in a place where 99% of the food has to be imported, where the local energy supplies are declining, and the lifeblood of the economy is a substance that is being extracted elsewhere in the home country much closer and less expensively, and consider what happens in a downturn.

Alaska, specially in the interior, would be the worst place to be at if the economy tanks.

I think I could live off the land here. I'd be totally out of my element in the lesser 48 states. I know there is a wide variety of food sources down there...but I would'nt have a clue how to catch or trap most of the critters or how to identify most of the edible plants.

If you leave somewhere SouthEast by the coastline or in one of the islands out there, you should be able to farm and fish, and stockpile food for using as needed. You can even hunt and fish during the winter, too. But in the interior it would be impossible to farm during the winter, and hunting would be quite difficult because of the extreme cold, and also because a lot of people would be trying to reach the same resources ahead of you. On top of that, one would have to cut a huge amount of firewood to stay warm.
