If a low income place had cockroaches so would other places. Roaches like water, paper and wood, and don't just hang out with the poor folk. I lived in a fairly well to do neighborhood in the south and those bugs were everywhere.

I would immagine it is possible a roach or two have been smuggled in state via somebodys belongings coming up the Alcan or a shipping container. But I have never seen one here.

A few decades ago they had an infestation of cockroaches in Whitter. I guess someone had them come in during a move and since most of the town lives in one building they spread really fast. Then some some company that had a roach killing product used the town as a advertising ploy and wiped them all out.

One of the guys I worked with got bit by a brown Recluse spider that came in on some freight a long time ago... Messed up his finger pretty good for awhile.

I've heard that use steam heating can occasionally get them, since it provides a year-round liveable environment for roaches.

Definitely not the norm, though.

I imagine they might come up, as has been suggested, in shipping containers, but I don't think they would last long. We didn't even get roaches like that in Missouri.
