Hello! My boyfriend and I are looking to move in the near future (possibly next summer / early fall) and we've decided AK is our dream (we are from Ohio
), but I'm not sure exactly where to start in selecting a location. We love the oceans and mountains and want to not be in a tourist-y area. We don't want to be too remote, but like i said congestion is what we want to get away from. I will be an RN next spring and he is looking to go to school and will be able to work just about anywhere to get started. Any suggestions? The temperature extremes and the differences in night and day hours in some areas are not a deterrent for us.

Anchor Point is about 20 minutes from Homer and is quiet, not touristy. There are beaches all around. Homer is in the process of expanding their hospital

The view in the area is across the inlet at the mountains on the other side and is stunning going into Homer. Property is much cheaper in Anchor Point but prices are rising. Go to

Warpt the tourists are either headed to Homer or Deep Creek. Anchor Point is actually much quieter in the summer months than Ninilchik or Homer or even Sterling.

Thanks for the links and suggestions. I guess i'm not sure of the extent of tourists in the first place. I may just be over estimating in own head thinking it's astounding..maybe not? We were hoping to be able to get quite a bit of land but are open to pretty much anything as we haven't even been to visit yet. We are probably going to visit, then get an apartment for several months so we can really look at homes and decide.

another question
how would someone go about building a cabin. If we had our choice and could find what we really want - we want a cabin on like 5 acres with nice scenery and outside of town. I looked at plots of land of about 5 acres and some of the access says none. Does that mean a road would have to be built? Would we pay for that construction as well?

Sometimes there is no legal access at all. that is rare but Alaska is one of the few states to have what we call landlocked parcels.

Alaska isn't like the lower 48. You don't need a bit of land. A place to raise your vegetables and a small moose pasture are about all anyone needs. Maybe a secure place to store your canned crops would be nice too.

), but I'm not sure exactly where to start in selecting a location. We love the oceans and mountains and want to not be in a tourist-y area. We don't want to be too remote, but like i said congestion is what we want to get away from. I will be an RN next spring and he is looking to go to school and will be able to work just about anywhere to get started. Any suggestions? The temperature extremes and the differences in night and day hours in some areas are not a deterrent for us.
