Wind gusts to 106 mph knock out power from Wasilla to Hope

A windstorm pounded parts of Southcentral Alaska early Monday, knocking down trees and cutting off power for thousands of people from the Matanuska Valley to the Kenai Peninsula. A gust of 106 mph was recorded in Bear Valley, on the Anchorage Hillside, with a 105 mph gust at Glen Alps.

...

The highest gust in Mat-Su was 61 mph in Palmer, said Brown, the MEA spokesman.

If the biggest busts were in Anchorage, were the winds coming north from Turnagain Arm? Typically these kinds of hurricane force winds get funneled down the Matanuska Valley through Palmer and then into Anchorage and the Susitna Valley. But that would put the biggest gusts in Palmer, not Anchorage.

The winds at my house here in Wasilla weren't that bad... It seems like in the fall we occasionally we those storms where the wind is more powerful coming up the Turnagain Arm.

I flew home on Sunday evening just as the front came through, I've never seen a jet rock so hard in a long time. I'm glad it wasn't rough the whole way to Bethel!

Wait, you mean there were strong gusts somewhere besides Delta? Impossible.

It was horrific at the house in Sterling. Screaming wind gusts that woke me numerous times. I had to fish a lawn chair out of our pond! Drove to Soldotna the next day. Saw an aluminum 2 place snowmachine trailer that appeared to have been blown on it's side up against a house! Funny thing is...we didn't even lose power at our house the entire time.
