I'm going up there next year for a fishing trip, and need to spend one night in King Salmon. What's it like there?

I'm guessing it's a pretty small town. Do they have cell service out there? I'd like to check in with my wife once I get there.

Small bush community, but there is a bar/restaurant next to the airport, and a small grocery store. At one time, I think it had the official highest prices in Alaska, and the US. There is cell service but it might depend on your provider. I was there only briefly for work. We went for a walk but promptly turned around when we saw foot and a half long grizzly tracks in the dirt of the main road...

If you go to Google Maps and look at the satellite image of King Salmon you will see it is not much more than an airport next to the river. Much of what you see is the old air force base. It was closed many years ago. I do not know what the status of it is anymore. If your cellphone does not work there you probably will be able to call from the hotel you are staying at. If it is one of the rare days the wind is not blowing you will develop a new hatred for bugs. Being fishing season the brown bears will be in the area. Your best bet for spotting bears will be late in the evening. when I lived there many years ago the bears would wander around the airport in the evening. You might not want to make any plans for your one day layover at King Salmon as chances are good you will be suffering from jet lag.
