How much snow to delay Ketchikans schools system? (Juneau and, Gateway: 2014, school district)

How much snow is needed to delay schools in Ketchikan Alaska and as a bonus does anybody have any favorite weather memories of hard windstorms or snowstorms?

It is one of the most hilly towns in Alaska. Much more hilly then Juneau and further south so most of the time it falls as regular 35F rain when you think it should turn to snow.

I'll type in the averages for January and February which are 38/28 and 41/31 on the dot with 13.88 inches of liquid and 12.74 inches. Man that's a LOT of rain and makes Portland Oregon look like Bend Oregon.

Ketchikan is in a temperate rainforest. What did you expect? You would be lucky to get one sunny day per month there.

Ketchikan gets about four times the amount of rain that Seattle does.

The night of February 11, 2014, Ketchikan experienced a winter storm complete with plenty of snow and high winds. However, we were still able to have school on February 12. We received a number of phone calls and emails and were stopped on the street regarding the decision to stay open.

Ketchikan schools really doesn't close too much because of weather. When they do, ice is more likely to be the culprit than snow.

Who are you quoting and what does that mean by being stopped on the street in regarding the decision? What is the most snow days Kathikan has had in a winter?

My parents know some people from Ketichikan that lived here for a few years that needed help and to make a long story short I learned some very interesting stories about their way of life and I wish we were more like it.

Re the "one sunny day per month" comment up thread... Every time I go there the sun breaks out. We were there for three weeks in 2009 and had several days of clear sunshine and high 70s low 80s. People like to grump about the rain, yes it rains, but don't blow it out of proportion...

Every time you go there...in the summer...you see the sun, so therefore, the rain isn't as bad as they say.

Try living there year-round, and then come back and tell us about the rain.
