I tend to agree w/ Marty on that...craigslist is the best place to find apartments....it's where I found mine....it's MUCH better than adn!!!!
Also, I live in the "midtown" area and it's just fine. I've been told there are pockets of decency in Mountain View, but I'm not brave enough to figure out what pockets those are as I have plans to move downtown as that's where I work and play.
I've also been told that areas that are decent for kids are Earthquake Park and Valley of the Moon (please correct me if I'm wrong - I'm sooooo very new here as well!!!). Eastside, I think, is alright. I would personally recommend Midtown for what you're looking for. Lots of duplex type situations and house rentals rather than huge apartment complexes, though there are those as well (where I currently reside as a hermit...lol)
But yes, CRAIGSLIST is the best place! Also if you're not moving up here w/ your furniture and things, it's a great place to find really decent stuff as people are constantly coming and going from this state. It's fantastic!

Good luck!

We lived in a 3 BR apartment in South Anchorage for a couple of years. Plan on $1200 per month on the average.

Default thanks

Thanks, everyone. I will check out the link. As far as furniture, we will be selling everything off. We are only bringing small essentials. The large piece items - bedroom suites, living room furniture, washer/dryer, kitchen appliances, extra cars, outdoor furniture, all of it is will be sold, as well as our house. So, we will be in the market for household goods. We do alot of camping so we will likely start out sleeping in the sleeping bags until we "collect" furniture. Thanks for everyone's help. As our time gets closer to moving, I will be posting more questions to you all. thanks

there are tons of futons on craigslist to start out on (which is what I'm doing!).

Something I would consider before getting up here....go through your kitchen and write a list of all the things you use but don't realize....that's a hard lesson I'm learning....I MISS my kitchen! I love to cook and now I'm working with really crappy stuff....and it SUCKS. I've been trying to get my husband to ship some of my kitchen stuff up, but that's proving futile! lol So, just a small word of advice...unless, of course, you want to buy all new....but I miss my IKEA cheese grater!!!!

If I let go of some of the (worn out, crappy) cookware I have... then I will have room to get the swanky new, good quality stuff.... well, that's the idea. Either that, or get a fully furnished place to rent, and slowly add my own pieces! But, for the most part, I will be bringing the "good stuff". ...will see the closer our time gets to leave.
