I am going to be doing seasonal work in Juneau this summer guiding trips, and am looking to have access to a vehicle. I don't really need one all the time but just for the occasional fishing/camping/hiking trip.
Does anyone have any advice for how to go about getting a car? Should I show up and just try and buy a beater for the summer? Is there someway to reach out to people so I can just like rent a car from a local or something for less? Or just rent for the summer or something.
Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!
^Good Advice. Last summer in homer I bought a 88 4x4 toyota rusted out beater for $1300 drove it all summer and sold it for $1000 when I left. I probably could have held out for the full $1300 but sometimes you got to sell stuff in a hurry. I only had to put $30 into it to get some free tires I received put on it. Good luck.
Buy a beater! Juneau has a very active CraigsList. We've purchased two cars from there and had pretty good luck. You will have to weed through some exceptionally crappy stuff and you might be surprised at how much people want for beaters (compared to some places in the Lower 48). There is also a Juneau Buy, Sell, and Trade FB group and people post cars on there occasionally. Cars in Juneau can be pretty pricey, even the used ones. If you are willing to do the leg work to sort through some of the not-so good ones you'll be set though.
Have fun in Juneau for the summer! I live there and absolutely love it. I've had friends come up and work for the summer and they've had a blast every time. If you have any other Juneau-specific questions feel free to ask or DM me!
If you are just looking for a car to use occasionally, you might get by with using the bus. It would take you to some trailheads and harbors. You won't be able to go out the road (to the end of the road) with that.
You can definitely get a beater once you get to Juneau. Some are a little overpriced because there is a somewhat limited supply in the summer. Craigslist is to go to place, it might also be worth swinging by a couple of auto shops to see if they know anyone selling a cheap vehicles.
