How would you all characterize the nature of cold weather in Anchorage? Seems like it's drier than where I live now, but lower temperature fluctuations and more snow.

Here it's just rain and 40-50s. Damp, but not freezing cold by any means.

Generally a dry cold. This winter the jet stream moved so we didn't get much snow. Right now there is no snow on the ground and the temp is 17f and humidly is 43%. I have a small humidifier going but the inside humidity is 25%. Sun is shining and hardly any clouds, looks nice but it is still winter. I have seen winter humidity as low as 10% outside in past years. Heating the air in the house decreases the humidity inside, most people have humidifiers in their homes.

The way I took it is that they were spoiled and antsy, and I probably don't mean that how you might think. Don't get me wrong, they work their a55es off, but they get to go to some of the coolest and most beautiful backcountry in the world and my understanding is that they were camping on the tarmac in McGrath waiting to be dispatched to a fire they never got to jump into.

So I think they were just bored out of their gourds, but that saying always stuck in my mind.

How do you guys handle winters that are not your usual? Are you glad there hasn't been much snow this year? Are others glad, or disappointed?

I've heard many Alaskans are not happy when their winters are too warm.

Winters like this one happen every now and then. This is the second time the Iditarod has been moved to fairbanks because of the lack of snow. But while the interior has had some warm days, it's still very cold in Fairbanks. For example, perhaps -15 to -30 degrees tonight, and probably Thursday night.

Your last winter before this one was much warmer as well.

Yes, the last two winters have been warmer. Last year wasn't quite as extreme as this year though. There was still snow on the ground. Skiing and snowboarding were still happening with regularity. I think that the lack of outdoor activitites has been hard on many locals. Lots of Alaskans ski, snowboard, snowshoe, etc. Most people suggest "finding a winter hobby" as one of the main ways to stay busy and happy during the long winters. The fact that nobody has been able to do that stuff this year has been tough. I'd say overall people are unhappy with this winter.
