I am a geography and geology buff, which explains my interests in the Aleutian Islands. They are an enormous archipielago, in the middle of the Pacific, have crazy weather, and are sparsely populated and far removed from "civilization".

I was wondering if anyone out there currently (or recently) has lived there? Say, Dutch Harbor, Adak, etc. Are these communities made up of just Navy Facilities and Fishing Ports? What is it like living out there?

The weather is wild as well. It seems so windy that there aren't any trees in the pictures I have seen. Just how is could the typical weather be described out there?

What kind of services, restaurants and stores do you have access to?

How often do you feel earthqukes out there? It seems like that part of the world is one of the most active that I have ever seen, when looking at the USGS website.

The islands definantly seem like an interesting place to live, I would love any info.

Thanks

I lived in Dutch Harbor/Unalaska last summer for a fishing job. As far as Alaskan bush towns go it's the most scenic I've seen. The hills around the town are pretty and devoid of trees. The population seemed more white than native Alaskan which didn't surprise me given the amount of fishing that takes place there. There's one grocery store, a couple hotels, and a library (where I spent most of my time away from work). The island has some WWII buildings scattered around which were interesting. Since it was summer the weather was pretty mild and calm, but there were a few days of storms with 60mph+ winds. All in all I enjoyed my time out there but couldn't live there year-round. It's just a little too remote. Here are some pictures I took.

This is a beached whale that was taken to the shore for tests.

Nice early fall colors.

Pic 4 says it's a beached whale....

The waterfall looks like something off of a Hallmark card...unreal....very beautiful pics.

Can you share your impressions on Onalaska also please? And any other of the Aleutians...

I lived out on Adak for 5 years back in the 70's to the early 80's. The terrain shown in your photos is very familiar, no trees, lots of tundra. Great high quality photos, I enjoyed them.

Dyscti, just have to say thanks for your informative description and superb photos -- and droll humor! It's not often we get to see the Aleutians this clearly. Thank you!

It's not the photographers, it's the subject! LOL

The problem is selecting the subject.
