Looking to hear from anyone who's done it. I don't mean a cabin, but an actual family home around 800-1200 square feet. We are in Dillingham. We'd love to build a house as opposed to buying but are not sure it will be worth the headache or cost.

Would love any tips on companies to contact for more information (I have been looking at Linwood Homes), advice on doing it economically, and anything else you can tell me about your experience.

I think the hardest thing may be finding a reputable contractor. A friend had a house built in Seward and had all kinds of trouble with his contractor. Ended up spending a fair chunk of change hiring someone else to fix all the screw ups.

Yes. It can be done without a lot of hassle in Dillingham. But you need an experienced contractor in that area. With good planning you can ship everything up from Seattle on a barge in a connected or two. The material costs w should be competitive with Anchorage. Planning is the key.

Have you seen the home kits that spenard sells? They give you a quick and easy barge price right to dillingham. I think they are fairly pricey but even if you don't use them, it would be a nice quick reference to compare other companies prices with.

Are you building it yourself or hiring it out?

Good luck.

One my coworkers bought a large Pacific Homes house and got it shipped from Canada to Fairbanks. The house is around 5,000 square feet, and includes a very large garage. The kit included all the materials needed to build the house. He said that he could not build such a home without paying a fortune to any of the local home builders in Fairbanks.

Maybe the OP wants to look into home kits as told above by 6.7traveler?
