At least on the Malispina. It's kind of slow but it's free. Unlike the staterooms or cabins. So stay connected or not it's now your choice...

Wi-Fi would be a welcome sight on all the ferries and many of major Alaskan cities Economically, it probably should be located in a public building. I personally would not mind paying for the service. Somehow, though I would not swear to it, since I've been on so many ferries from one end of the continents to the other, I've recall the ferries between Haines and Juneau having their own 2 online computers which restricted the amount of terminal time since everyone else want on. I know the Juneau library have free or unprotected Wi-Fi and I somehow remember having wi-fi connection, though rather weak, in the Nat'l Forest Service area also in Juneau. Though, in the case of the NFS, I have a sneaky suspicion, I may have glom onto someone's private wifi.

This has been in the works for a while now.

I like what they have done to the Malaspina.

Yeah, I remember we were having a conversation about this when I rode the mal last month. It is very slow and unreliable.
According to the purser, they are working on improving it. When they get it to a point where it is reliable enough, they are going to charge for it.

All the cruise lines charge for wifi access too & most of it is $$$$$. On our last cruise we spent more on Internet access than we did on drinks.

it's really no big deal, since the ferry's are GPS/sat controlled anyway. It was just a matter of getting decent equipment, enough uplink/down bandwith that wouldn't interfere with the nav systems.
