Do we have a stand your ground law here and does anyone know what the legal precedent is if you have to shoot in self defense and it results in a fatality? Are you fighting an uphill 5 figure legal battle or are you questioned for an hour and are on your way?

What is the precedent for gangs who are not clearly armed but who match your movements when you try to get away?

I am not worried about inside my home am a little worried if I am in my truck and very worried if I had to defend myself on foot in public place where they don't clearly have a weapon but are far larger or in a group and chasing me.
All this is covered in a concealed carry course. It is a good thing to know the law.

I really need to go take one of those but they are expensive and I have not really gotten a concrete answer on that specific scenario when I ask the companies that put it on. I am ex military and I know how to use a gun I just need to sit down with a recording device while a trooper/DA says yes you can shoot if there are more than one unarmed persons pursuing you on the street in a threatening manner.

Or if its one person who is significantly larger. The classes are around $500 so I need those statements, if its not legal to shoot then there is no reason to pay the fee.

Do you have to wait until you are on the ground and they are beating you and risk them taking your gun and using it against you?

I'd go ask an attorney versed in state firearms issues.

But whatever they say, I still think every bullet comes with an attached lawyer. Plus, of course, what's threatening to you might not be threatening to the jury....

Even if you're not going to be held criminally liable, there's that whole civil court thing that can, and does, happen.

I have a mentally ill older brother who moved to Alaska. He is very self dependent but can not function in a 9 to 5 world with conventional social norms. He likes Alaska because it is a easier place for people like him who make money doing side jobs and then spend lots of time hunting and fishing. I have another extended family member who kept getting in trouble in Kentucky and moved to Alaska so he could make most of his money in a couple months on a ship and then spend the rest of the year partying.

They key is having the training with the trooper and a lawyer saying where that line is on a recording. And walk through the sequence of events. Can you brandish and if they don't back down where is the line, etc etc.

If you get that info documented then it would then be a civil issue only which would still not be fun but criminal confinement is what you want to avoid. Should not go to Jury trial if you have state approval (ie the trooper with the lawyer) since it would not be a crime.

The concealed carry course doesn't cost anywhere near $500....at least in the Fairbanks area. The most expensive I have seen is $250, but most are less. The course I went to included instruction from a lawyer and a LEO on the legal aspects of the use of deadly force.

If you wanna know the real scoop on Anchorage crime get on the Facebook group called "Anchorage Scanner Joe". Very informative. These folks report and post on crime in Anchorage often in real time. Definitely stuff the Anchorage Visitors Bureau doesn't want you to know.

Anchorage does seem to be having a lot of bad news, with all those shootings in parks and the stabbing on the coastal trail.

One thing is for sure, when economies go south, crime goes up, no matter where in the world you're living. Some folks steal to live, some folks take advantage of poverty to grow their own income through black market activity.

Here on the central Kenai Peninsula I haven't seen much of a shift lately, but there is some chatter about increasing crime and theft in fringe/border areas like Nikiski and Kasilof. Again, where folks have the least ability to absorb losses in income, crime rates go up during economic downturns.
