Are road conditions bad by this point or still a little early?

Rupert itself can only be rainy at worst during this time of year. Actually, if it isn't raining in October there you'd be quite fortunate.

Inland BC could see some frost and even snow in October, though I agree it's somewhat unlikely.

Average low for October in Smithers, BC is just below freezing.

I made the trip one December and the roads were in good shape. My vehicle was covered in mud by the time I got to Prince Rupert, but a self serve car wash took care of most of it. As mentioned, only a freak storm might give you trouble.
