Offshore AK Peninsula near Sandpoint. Preliminary magnitude 8.1 but that's being revised down. 5 or 6 shakes following between 5 and 7 magnitudes. We were rocking and rolling in Homer and still swaying 20 minutes later. Tsunami warning in effect here until 1 am. So glad the house isn't down on shore! I wouldn't want to be sitting in one of those million dollar condos at the end of the Spit tonight.

Yeah, just saw this trending on Twitter so had to run over here to C-D and check the forum!
Dang, even if downgraded that sounds scary!!
Largest one I experienced living in North Hollywood was 6.5 in the 1971 San Fernando quake.
I was 12 and I'll never forget it!

Stay safe as much as you can Alaska peeps!

I didn't feel it at all in Anchorage. I first became aware of it when my wife got a tsunami alert and just about went into a panic. It took me a bit to convince her that our house will never be hit by a tsunami and that we don't need to go anywhere. She was out of state when Anchorage got hit by that 7.1. That shook things!

It was prolonged, which is unnerving. Just kept going and going, and aftershocks came right after it. Even though my house is higher up and a bit outside Homer proper, I'm still in the telephone exchange that gets the automatic tsunami alerts. If the wind's right I can hear the sirens/PA announcements from the sea level parts of Homer and the Homer Spit. They did evacuate...a short walk up my road gives me a distant view of town and there was a long line of headlights heading to higher ground. The Spit road is 1 lane each way and 5 miles long. A few feet of sand and riprap between them and salt water. Must be a nerve-wracking couple of hours for all the seasonal businesses, hotel guests and condo/apartment owners way out on the tip, wondering whether they're going to lose everything.

I was in Valdiva, Chile for a conference when this monster struck. 9.5 largest ever recorded, left 2Mn homeless in less than 10 min. I will never forget it as long as I live. And, maybe that's why I live where I do now.

Those were sturdy buildings that withstood 6-7 quakes for decades. Eventually even they will fall. Now in Santiago, they design the buildings to withstand 8s
