Any of you Alaska folk have Star link Internet? Thoughts? Pros/Cons?

I am curious how it is changing the internet situation in rural AK if at all.

Thanks in advance.

Starlink isn't changing anything up here any time soon. They have focused their constellation further south where there is more money to be made. Their website tells me they are "targeting" service in my area by 1st quarter 2023 and for a $100 bucks I can hold my place in line. Nope.

OneWeb appears closer to serving northern latitudes than Starlink.

I was curious about that. Part of me thought they might prioritize Alaska instead of areas with a developed infrastructure and multiple high speed options already.

Funny thing is though that the locations I lived in MI and CO didn't have high speed options so I guess there is plenty to service down south.

It was supposed to have already come to my area but they keep pushing it back and pushing it back. I've been on the waiting list since forever. At this point I doubt they'll carry through at all...the whole point was supposed to be to bring high speed internet to underserved areas, but as usual profit ended up being king and there just aren't enough people here to bring in the big bucks...the same reason we're underserved already.

Interior Alaska isn't the only place lacking "high speed" internet! I live in Anchorage and the most I can get is 10mb down and 1mb up, daughter on other side of town only gets 7gb. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) set the standard for broadband internet at 25 Mbps for download speeds, and 3 Mbps for upload. To be considered “high speed” your download speed should be higher than the 25 Mbps standard, ranging anywhere from 100 to 1,000 Mbps.
