A feel good story for a change.

https://www.ktoo.org/2023/09/01/leo-...everal%20weeks.

"..Wilkins and Albert were both out of town during the flooding, but they watched the viral video of the house collapsing into the river. They think the sound of the river and the collapsing house made Leo run away before it fell in.

“I watched the video of the house over and over again, just to figure out what it was like to be in it, and is it possible that he’s ok,” Albert said. “It was hard to imagine that anyone would be ok.”

Holy smokes I'm glad kitty is okay and was found! This definitely backs up my requirement to live on high ground, lol

The ground isn't any higher anywhere else in the Mendenhall valley. Far away from a river might be a better criteria. I've heard one property lost 1600 ft. of real estate between the house and the river.

High ground in Juneau means living on a mountain slope, as I do. Of course that comes with its own hazards, such as land and snow slides.

It was Sitka. Also Haines had a recent slide that killed at least one person.

There are some neighborhoods in Juneau that are vulnerable to being hit by a once every 50 or 100 year avalanche.

Years ago there was a huge avalanche at the end of Eklutna Lake near Anchorage. There is a public use cabin and an airstrip back there but neither of those were damaged. We rode back there about a week later on snowmachines just to check it out. It was impressive. A large swath of mature forest was wiped out. We are talking trees that were at least 80 years old.

Two deaths in Haines. Here's a recent story about memorial built by the father.
